The Labrador remains, with justification, the most popular dog bred today. They are happy, friendly, charming dogs, good tempered, easily trainable and eager to please. Although any trainer at times, will be tempted to disagree with the eager to please aspect of their personality.

The Labrador's true job is to collect shot game and bring the bird back to his handler as quickly as possible, the handler then dispatching any game that is not dead. To do this job the dog must be patient, have a good nose, be able to hunt well, swim, have a soft mouth and mark well. All under control of course!

A great deal of training is involved. The basic instinct to hunt and retrieve is in there - but - under control is where the work comes in. Books,Video's and local Gun Dog Clubs can all help

If you enjoy competition then Field Trials or Working Tests may be your thing, otherwise you will be looking for a job on a local Shoot as a Picker-up. Not easy to find, but then you too will experience the wonder and exhilaration of working with your Labrador as a team - picking upp.
